Marc Ecko's Getting Up Contents Under Pressure
Remember, no matter where you go, you can leave your mark. Simple words of wisdom befitting a condolence card by Hallmark, sure, but not for the beginning, middle and ending of a videogame.

Remember, no matter where you go, you can leave your mark. Simple words of wisdom befitting a condolence card by Hallmark, sure, but not for the beginning, middle and ending of a videogame.

Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure puts you in the underground world of graffiti art where you sneak into places you shouldn't be to paint things you shouldn't be painting. If the painting bit gets too repetitive (oooh, foreshadowing), landing punches on rival gang members or coming to blows with the police allows you to leave your mark in a different way.

A great premise that's befuddled by some major hang-ups, unfortunately. Camera views, though you can control them to some extent, are weak at best and totally wimpy otherwise. There's nothing more frustrating than trying to fight multiple targets while also fretting the camera view so you can actually see what you're trying to fight or, worse, see what the thug with the bat is doing behind you.

Speaking of which, there's nothing special about it the fight mechanics in general, either. You kick, you punch, you block. Doesn't sound like much because it isn't. Well, there's also jerky, clunky and illogical kicks, punches and blocks, but that's nitpicking.

And for a game based on painting things, you'd think there'd be a few paintable options beyond the dude's name and some repetitive throw-ups (actually tag jargon, the literal inference is off, because the art is actually pretty fine).

Too bad, gobs of potential unfulfilled; a great idea for a game with a good storyline that's all the better because it's not a re-hash of a hundred other "urban" games, shedding light on graffiti art as subculture -- and it's got a killer soundtrack --, but Getting Up is just plain weak in key areas like, oh, graphics, gameplay and depth.
