Though a portable Resident Evil game is an exciting proposition - zombie bashing to go! - the actually delivery of same in Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is a bit of a let down, clever anagram aside.

Of the two play modes offered, the first is a decent but dinky RE circa 1996 console replica, warts and camera conundrums and all - which is cool in a pocket retro sense, but that's about it. There's also a special "Rebirth" play mode that integrates the DS's unique touch screen, re-envisioning the game by adding block shoving and puzzle solving elements as well as way too many zombie thumb smudging encounters that are about as convincing as an afterthought.

Not at all bad, especially considering the rock-solidity of the Resident Evil franchise as a whole, but definitely more of a cash-grab than a gaming innovation.

  • TIP: There are some funny little self-indulgences to be found in Resident Evil: Deadly Silence... also a little perverse. If you let Jill or Chris just idle for a while, they'll enter into that inactive animation until you resume. However, when striking their bored waiting poses, you can use the touch screen to tap on select body parts for some indignant responses.
