Pokemon Snap (N64)
You might as well shoot me now; I’ve become a fan of Pokemon. This blatantly fluffy kiddie title has all the ear-marks of great gaming and gracefully omits the blood and guts and death and violence that so many games seem to need in order to play well.
In Pokemon Snap, you’re just a boy on a photo-journalism mission to snap picts of Pokemon characters. And, like the saying goes, you gotta catch ‘em all. Instantly addictive, your photography skills are immediately criticized for lack of subject size, positioning and pose. Ripping off a spool of film is one thing, getting those award winning close-ups of a Jigglypuff or Poliwag, those National Geographic caliber photos, that’s where the challenge lies. Once you’ve ventured out a little you are rewarded with a few tools to help you lure the critters out for a better shot. You can toss shiny apples into the fray which seems to be a favorite treat of the Pokemon, but it’s just as much fun pegging Pikachu in the head with the old Granny Smiths. Too, you can toss little stink-bombs ("Pester Balls," no known cure) that can really rile the Pokedolts and bring ‘em out of hiding. Eventually you get a flute and do the Pied Piper thing. There is surprising depth in this game, too, where rescuing one character or provoking another with open alternate levels and/or reveal still more Pokemon. Not great, fathomless depth, but more than you’d expect from such a fluffy game. There are a hundred and some Pokemon hiding in here and I’ll be damned, but I figure to snap the majority of them. Then you can shoot me.
