Call of Duty 3
Another interactive re-telling of WWII combat that oozes grief and conveys a palpable sense of empathy for ordinary men in extraordinary situations. Same old great stuff on different new game systems. Duty Calls. Again.

If ever a game deserved a sequel -- or two, in this case --, it's Call of Duty. Firstly, Call of Duty 3 is as ferociously inspired as its predecessors are; still with the harrowing, interactive re-telling of WWII combat that oozes grief and conveys a palpable sense of empathy for ordinary men in extraordinary situations.

Secondly, it marks the Call of Duty debut on PlayStation3 and Wii (the sophomore showing on Xbox 360), so it won't feel like a same-old sequel to many gamers (though it does for Xbox 360 players).

That said, though essentially identical on all platforms, the game manages to look rather lousy on PlayStation3, worse than the allegedly-weaker 360's version, anyway, and certainly not living up to the superior expectations of Sony's Cell-processing Blu-ray game machine (the Wii version, meanwhile, just fails on many levels). The PlayStation3 version does add some novel gameplay mechanics that will have you yarding or vigorously pumping on the Sixaxis controller in melee combat or outright wrestling matches with some Wehrmacht scumbag (as opposed to just mashing buttons on the Xbox 360), which is part cool, part wankfest.

Actually, overall, the PS3 version of Call of Duty 3 controls a little more smoothly, more intuitively. Shame it doesn't look better, too.

Still, all of it is top-notch '40's warfare, all told, but none of it is particularly "next gen" other than that fact that it's on the next gen systems.
