Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
While Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End looks delicious on Xbox 360, likewise delectable on PlayStation 3 -- albeit frightfully choppy -- it's merely appetizingly adequate here on Wii, the poor, underpowered system that it is.
But it's a movie-based game, and if the thought of Johnny Depp wearing eyeliner while dressed up in his Sunday afternoon lawn-mowing attire (or so one might assume, having heard that the actor is a tad eccentric) and taking on undead salty dogs has got you all in a tizzy, heart aflutter, then you're going to want to buy this game. Nevermind that the hack 'n' slash ('n' shoot 'n' 'nade) gameplay gets monotonous just 28 and a half minutes in, that the yo-ho dialogue is voiced by no-name sound-(barely)-alikes, that the back-tracking bauble-collecting mandates merely serve to show-off some modestly pretty scenery but otherwise reek of run-out-of-ideas rehashing. Throwing in some novel, sometimes-thorny Wii-mote controlling sort of makes up for the otherwise washed-out visuals. Sort of.
Regardless, it's enough that they got Johnny Depp's staggering swagger (stwagger?) bang on, that the characters all look good enough to mow the lawn on Sunday, or, more to the point, to star in a movie about pirates and pirate's bane, that gameplay can get decently intense from time to time -- certainly in boss battles -- and that the general, sword & musket, ship & cannon fodder ambiance riddled with rummy humor transition to interactive form rather well.
Plus, the box cover looks great!
TIP: In dueling in the Wii version of Pirate of the Caribbean: At World's End, hold the Z button as you wag the 'mote up and down which, will both block and counterstrike if the action is appropriate (or just block if not).
