Gran Turismo
Gran Turismo, probably the best racer ever made. Not that it's totally different from any other racer, it's just so deep, so finely tuned, so attentive to detail and as close to perfect as it gets. Arcade mode feels familiar, but sim mode, wow! Alone as a simulation GT is amazing- and you're expected to win races to boot!

Pick any one of 150 or so perfectly rendered cars (dozens of models from a dozen manufacturers) and master it in the beginner arcade- practically a complete game in itself. Aside from winning the usual points/prises/money, more options open up as you get better: More tracks, more race types, more cars, more car parts- even bonus cars that are otherwise unattainable. I'm not sure if there is an end to GT's expansiveness... It's not just a matter of buying one favourite vehicle and mastering it, some races have restrictions, like front wheel drive only, or stock cars only. You're sucked into GT's depth whether you like it or not. Graphics and frame rate are second to none and gameplay never bogs down. Currently, I'm frustrated by GT's steep learning curve but I'm loving the ride. You don't own this game, it owns you.
