LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars
LEGO plus videogames, the Reese's Peanut Butter cups of digital entertainment, the benevolent cash cow concept that just keeps giving. What's not to like?

While the novelty of marrying LEGO building blocks with movies to make videogames wore off a long, long time ago, the concept alone nevertheless promises hours and days of wholesome family fun. Or that's the case with LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars III, at least.

We're talking LEGO, after all, the preeminent playthings for blocky model making and well-rounded imaginations. Merge that pastime with another favorite, namely videogames, and you really can't go wrong. Sure, it's redundant and pandering, but that's what happens with great ideas that deliver: they deliver more. It's why they sell Reese Peanut Butter cups in 3-packs and even 4-packs of 3-packs in a pack.

Case in point: there is nearly a score of LEGO-ized movie games out there already - LEGO Batman, LEGO Harry Potter, and so on. Two LEGO games have been based on the Star Wars movie franchise with a third LEGO Star Wars game based on the first two LEGO Stars Wars games but bundled together with some bonus materiel for the current generation of consoles. That's three snap-together Star Wars games and now a fourth. Cash cow much? No matter, each and every one delivers the goods, the pandering cows of cash, the chocolate-covered peanut butter bovine interactive. Bring it on.

This here LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars makes a humorous spoof of the television series, itself a spin-off of the 2nd film in the blockbuster movie franchise, both unabashed merchandising opportunities for George Lucas, who apparently needs more money but can't think of a new way to make some.

Fine, George. Here's another 20 bills for the coffers. In exchange: great, goofy fun for up to four players from two generations. Stuffed with collectables and hidden treasure for those willing to consign the time to collecting and discovering, it is instant accessibility that makes LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars great. It's a game kids can play with parents, siblings and friend at any old time for any amount of time thanks to a handy "drop in, drop out" function. That is to say, if Junior is whacking away through one level or t'other, dad or mom or big brother Biff can each grab themselves a controller, push start and poof into the game as another character without breaking stride. Time to make supper, take a phone call or get a life? No worries, drop out and Junior's game continues uninterrupted.

That said, the game is also fun enough that you may want to skip the call or put off dinner or real life for a while longer, which you'll surely do if there's two generations of Star Wars fans at play. After all, youngsters will be playing as their favorite cartoon hero in a galaxy far, far away. Old school Star Wars fans in the house will be cathartically slashing and blasting those ridiculously insipid characters to their primordial plastic bits.
