After some eight years of making movie-based games or re-making ("porting") other companies' titles to new platforms, indie studio Edge of Reality is going it alone as the Austin, TX-based game developer just announced the development of a self-funded next-gen project called Cipher Complex.
Cutting its teeth with the likes of Spider-Man (from Neversoft's PlayStation version to the N64) and throw-away tie-ins like Shark Tale, Edge of Reality has decided the time is right to give life to its own internal vision. Cipher Complex will be the first completely original title from the company, touted as an intense, cinematic military combat game.
"The evolution of action games has seemed to plateau, perhaps because of the emphasis on sequels," said Binu Philip, president of Edge of Reality. "We are exploring and developing brand new styles of gameplay and methods of storytelling. The concept and mechanics of Cipher Complex have been incubating in our mind for years, and with power of the next-gen consoles, we can finally make our dream project a reality." Hence, Cipher Complex is currently in development for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 with an expected release date some time in 2007... maybe later, considering Edge's web site still says they're hiring, looking for people to work on it...
