Square Enix and Buena Vista Games just revealed that their join-project game, Kingdom Hearts II, has officially sold through more than one million units in North America, making it one of the top-selling new releases of 2006.

A sequel to the similarly popular Kingdom Hearts released back in September 2002, which went on to sell more than 2.6 million units in North America, Kingdom Hearts II combines classic Disney characters and worlds into an original story with new characters and environments created in the renowned Square Enix style as seen in the likewise phenomenally popular Final Fantasy series.

Since its North American release on March 28, 2006, Kingdom Hearts II has been acclaimed by critics and game enthusiasts alike--and now the general game-consuming masses too, obviously.

To date the Kingdom Hearts series, which includes a Game Boy Advance version, has shipped more than 8.5 million copies worldwide.
