The Nintendo World store in New York became the site of a full on dork fest late last night as the first Nintendo DS Lite systems went on sale at midnight.

The lighter, brighter versions of Nintendo DS attracted hundreds of loyal Nintendo fans, including some who lined up as early as noon on Saturday to buy the system, which went on sale at the stroke of midnight plus one second, making it today, Sunday, launch day, June 11.

Reportedly, one keener even left a wedding party early and joined the line still wearing his tuxedo. Dude obviously learned nothing from The Wedding Crashers.

Nintendo thanked the first 100 people in the free publicity line up with a free DS Lite carrying case and a copy of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, both of which are now available on eBay for $1.82 and $14.74 respectively.

Some fans arrived dressed as their favorite Nintendo characters, which added to the atmosphere of fun and community while perpetuating stereotypes like "games are for dorks" and "Nintendo fans are whack."

From its release in November 2004 through the end of March 2006, Nintendo has sold nearly 17 million DS systems, including the original DS systems, which are larger, dimmer and gawkier. The DS Lite, one third slimmer, noticeably brighter and way-not gawky (read our DS Lite review), which has been on sale in Japan since the beginning of March, has spurred a new sales phenomenon over there, selling like hotcakes in the land of the rising dork.
