Not to be outdone by innovations such as Toronto-based QuickPlay Media’s recent streaming audio-to-Blackberry announcement, Sony of Canada Ltd. has unveiled a new media player that will allow Hi-Fi reception of streaming audio in the home.

The Sony CPF-IX001 is a wireless streaming-audio player that features built-in stereo speakers and a subwoofer. Combined with an Ethernet or wireless 802.11b/g connection, the CPF-IX001 can also be networked with a home computer to allow playback of audio files from the computer’s hard drive. It can also be networked via emerging broadband-over-powerline technology, meaning that it can draw both electricity and audio signals (for the subwoofer only) from a single wall socket. The device will be available in Canada in September, at a suggested price of $399.99.

At the same time as the CPF-IX001 announcement, Sony of Canada also released details of the DAV-X1V, a micro-2.1 surround sound system incorporating a five-disc DVD/CD/SA-CD changer as well as Sony’s S-Force Pro Front Surround technology, which allows it to replicate full 5.1 surround sound with a smaller footprint.

The DAV-X1V is compatible with both 720p and 1080i HDTV sets, and will hit stores later this month with a suggested sticker price of $1,499.99.
