Tokyo Game Show -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that it would release DualShock3 Wireless Controller, a new controller for the PlayStation3 (PS3) incorporating a rumble feature, in Japan in November and in the rest of the world next spring. The controller inherits the basic design and functionality of the regular SixAxis PlayStation controller (the one without rumble), while adding a tactile feedback feature, also known as "rumble."

Sony claims that the added rumble feature, combined with the motion sensitive six-axis sensing system, will "take gamers deeper into the world of interactivity, delivering a more intuitive, realistic and immersive game play experience." Regular gamers might just call it the good old DualShock controller they've played with for years on the PlayStation2, or similar to the good old Xbox 360 experience with its rumbling wireless controller (though not with motion sensitivity), or similar to the wireless, motion-sensitive rumbling experience found on the Nintendo Wii.

Sony did not include rumble technology with the launch of the PlayStation3 and its SixAxis controller, claiming such technology was dated and gamers weren't interested in it. However, losing a huge and embarrassing lawsuit to Immersion Corporation, the company that owns patents on the required haptic technology, is generally regarded as the real reason for the omission. Sony settled with Immersion just this last March, clearing the path for rumble's return to PlayStation gaming and, specifically, for the first (official) rumbling controller for PS3.

At any rate, the rumble feature in new controller is now available to game developers and many forthcoming games will incorporate it, including imminent biggies such as Burnout Paradise, Soldier of Fortune: Pay Back, Devil May Cry 4, Blacksite: Area 51, and Assassin’s Creed.

More importantly, many PlayStation3 titles that are already in the market can be made compatible with the rumble feature through a software update, with confirmation for several titles already doing just that, including WarHawk, MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, and Resistance: Fall of Man.

Sweet.
