Warner Bros. has pegged July 21, 2009 to release the mega comic book film adaptation hit (the what?), Watchmen, on DVD.

Here's the skinny: 300's Zack Snyder adapts Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' acclaimed comic book, Watchmen, for the big screen.

Set in an alternate universe circa 1985, the film's world is an unstable one where a nuclear war is imminent between America and Russia. Superheroes have been forced to go into retirement due to the government's Keene Act, but the death of The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), an ex-hero commando, perks the interest of one of the country's last remaining superheroes, Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley).

Watchmen, which grossed $107 million at the box office, will be released as a single DVD and Blu-ray containing just the original 162 minute movie (in widescreen, of course). Too short for some, so WB is also releasing Watchmen as a Director's Cut, also on DVD and Blu-ray.

The Directors cut will include, among other things, an additional 25 minutes of movie, a featurette called The Phenomenon: The Comic that changed Comics, 11 Watchmen making-of webisodes and My Chemical Romance's Desolation Row music video.
