Japan Xboxed
Xbox
As of today, Xbox is on sale at retail outlets throughout Japan for an estimated price of 34,800 yen (approximately $260.00 USD) along with 50,000 limited edition units with some cosmetic differences. Xbox is available at thousands of Japanese retail outlets with 12 titles available, including "Jet Set Radio Future" (from Sega), "Genma Onimusha" (from Capcom), "Silent Hill 2: Saigo no Uta" (from Konami), "Double-S.T.E.A.L." (from Bunkasha), "Nezmix" (from Microsoft), "Project Gotham Racing: World Street Racer" (from Microsoft) and "Dead or Alive 3" (from Tecmo).

Silent Hill 2

Konami’s Playstation 2 title Silent Hill 2 elevates videogaming to mature, emotional -- and extremely disturbing -- art.

The Gift Of Gizmo 2K1: Games For Gamers 1.2
It doesn't matter what videogame system graces the home this year; there are great games for each of them. Here's a round-up of some the best; the newest and the brightest hope for the future of videogames (mostly). Darn, more choices. Hey, at least they're in alphabetical order...

Xbox: Crushing the Myths, Exploding the Hype
No, the Xbox does not cause cancer. Nor will it turn base metals into gold. There, glad we got that out of the way. With the launch of Microsoft's mean, green gaming machine upon us, we had our own Steve Tilley poke a few holes in some of the more preposterous myths (no, the Xbox will not crash like Windows) and outrageous hype (no, the Xbox does not load all games instantaneously) surrounding one of the most scrutinized consoles in video game history. It's an epic-length read, but it'll give you something to do while you wait for the next shipment of Xboxes to come in.

Silent Hill Dreams Enhanced, Coming to Xbox
PlayStation 2, Xbox
Konami of America, Inc., announced today that a new rendition of their hit survival/horror title, Silent Hill 2 , will be coming to the Xbox "shortly after" Bill's Big System launches on November 15. Better still, it's to be an enhanced version of the already superlative PS2 version. Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams features refined graphics and lighting effects, a new playable character, new areas to explore, new characters to interact with and a new chapter to the game not found in the PlayStation 2 version released in September. Score another point for the BillBox.

Extermination
PlayStation 2
As survival/horror games go, Extermination has just been resoundedly trounced by Konami's recently-released Silent Hill 2 and, regardless, isn't quite as spiffy as Capcom's Resident Evil Code Veronica X. But as Extermination was, in fact, developed by some of the creators the original Resident Evil, the genre's watershed, the Godfather of Survival/Horror games, it's not at all bad either.

Silent Hill 2
PlayStation 2
Interactive entertainment, despite its moments of excellence and triumph, still hasn’t quite achieved the deserved status of Art. For too many people, the automatic mental image of “video games” defaults to a (not entirely misleading) beeping, flashing catalogue of gaudy arcade machines, boppy digitized music, vapid anthropomorphized characters and--mark this--mindless distraction. For such people, something like Silent Hill 2 will come as a shock, perhaps even a menace, certainly a rude awakening; this game has disarmingly powerful things to say about grief, pain, loss and anger. The fact that it does so in the form of the scariest, creepiest, most disturbing video game ever made---well, just think of that as a pack-in bonus.

Viable Videogame Platforms EXHIBIT D: Xbox
Xbox
The last of our "next generation" console close-ups, but the first and only to really offer us the "next level" in console gaming: Microsoft's Xbox.

Viable Videogame Platforms EXHIBIT B: Sony PlayStation2
PlayStation 2
Nintendo's forthcoming GameCube almost directly contrasts Sony's PlayStation2, the "computer entertainment system" that has been on the market for almost a year. Unlike the 'Cube's powerfluff dedication to the videogame experience, Sony has expanded their target market to include the home electronics consumer, perhaps forgoing their core audience in the process.
